Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD, occurs when people experience a painful lack of control of their jaw muscles. The source of TMD is a problem with the joint that connects your jaw to your skull, otherwise known as the temporomandibular joint, or the TMJ. TMD is widely referred to as TMJ, but TMD occurs when your TMJ is in distress. No matter what we call it, TMD is painful.
