Do I Need Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride: a fantastic, naturally occurring mineral that promotes strong, healthy teeth by strengthening enamel. Most everyone has heard of fluoride and probably experienced a fluoride treatment or two as a kid, but that’s the extent of their knowledge. You see, the development of plaque wears away at your enamel in a process called demineralization. Fluoride counters this by encouraging another process: remineralization. Even though fluoride treatments typically end around the age of 14, anyone (especially those experiencing the early stages of tooth decay) can benefit from a treatment. Of course, even with this basic understanding of what fluoride is, and does, we, at Columbus Dental Solutions, often hear the same question:

Do I Need a Fluoride Treatment?

Well, the answer really depends on your current level of oral health and whether you have any tooth decay. If your mouth is in tip-top shape, you probably don’t need professional care. If you have tooth decay or high levels of plaque, an in-office treatment may be recommended. In any case, daily fluoride use is suggested by most dentists. Depending on your needs you can increase your fluoride levels with at-home products or take advantage of professional treatments right in our office.

If you are interested in incorporating fluoride into your daily routine, there are a number of products that can help you increase your fluoride levels. Toothpastes and oral washes are often enhanced with fluoride while fluoridated water can carry fluoride around your mouth through your saliva. Of course, some products provide better fluoride treatments than other so ask your dentist for recommendations. As for professional treatments, you will experience a higher dose of fluoride in the form of a gel or paste.

Fluoride Remineralizes Teeth & Helps Prevent Cavities

Truthfully, there are no downsides to receiving a fluoride treatment. You can benefit from a treatment at any age and any level of oral health to achieve a beautiful, strong, healthy smile. Though a professional treatment may not be necessary, make sure that your teeth come in contact with this wondrous mineral as often as possible.

If you would like to learn more about fluoride treatments and how you can protect your enamel please call our office. We offer a wide variety of general treatments, as well as specialized dentistry, and look forward to helping you achieve your best smile.
