Consultations & Dental Exams
When you have a consultation or routine dental checkup, our doctors and team will personalize your appointment to fit your needs. If you have any dental concerns or we catch anything during your checkup, we’re happy to show you a dentist’s view of your mouth while we walk you through your diagnosis and treatment. We take the time to get to know you as a person, assess your dental history, and create an individualized treatment plan tailored to you. Please let us know what you need, so we can do our best to make it happen!
Digital & 3D X-Rays
X-rays are a normal part of dental exams for patients of all ages. Many dental health problems can’t be seen during a visual examination by the naked eye.
An x-ray is needed to reveal:
- Decay hiding between teeth or underneath existing restorations (fillings or crowns)
- Cavities deep inside teeth
- Gum disease that isn’t apparent on the surface of gums
- Infections in the jawbone
- Abscesses and cysts
- Some developmental abnormalities
- Some tumors
Digital x-rays are safe and fast. Within seconds, precise digital images can be viewed and enlarged on a computer or TV screen. They’re a terrific diagnostic tool to help us determine your dental condition, and we’ll offer to show them to you as we walk you through what’s going on in your mouth. In instances when x-rays aid us in detecting oral cancer early, they can even help save your life!
Professional Dental Cleanings
Whether or not you ever need or want more extensive dental work done, please at the very least love your smile enough to see us every six months for a regular cleaning and exam. All it takes is less than an hour a couple of times a year to help preserve your oral health and your smile for decades to come. You owe it to your future self! Our talented dental hygienists are friendly, accommodating to your needs, efficient, and thorough. They always work with gentleness and compassion.
Part of looking after your health and providing a thorough dental cleaning is using clean, safe water at our office. At Dental Solutions of Columbus, we have installed DentaPure® to treat our dental unit waterlines. These cleaning cartridges prevent any harmful bacteria from contaminating our water. You can rest easy knowing that we only use purified water when treating our patients.
Periodontal Care & Gum Disease Treatment
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults over 35. Gum disease ranges from gingivitis to more serious forms and stages of periodontitis. The prevalence of gum disease continues to increase with age. If your gums feel tender or sore, or if they look red and swollen, you might have gum disease. Other warning signs include gums that bleed more than you’d expect after flossing, receding gums, pain or sensitivity in your teeth, loose-feeling teeth, and persistent bad breath that can’t be explained. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss as well as other serious health problems.
In the past, gum disease used to require surgery, but that’s not the case anymore! While surgery is still an option and sometimes needed, many cases of gum disease can now be treated with deep dental cleanings, local antibiotics, and special mouth rinses.
We also have a soft tissue dental laser called a PerioLase® that we use to repair damage from gum disease through advanced laser gum therapy. PerioLase is a minimally invasive, less intrusive gum disease treatment that leads to faster, more comfortable recovery times.
Oral Cancer Screenings
It might surprise you to find out that oral cancer is actually curable in 80–90% of cases, but it has to be caught soon enough. At Dental Solutions of Columbus, we screen for early detection of oral cancer using VELscope®. Its special light technology has proven successful in identifying soft tissue abnormalities that can turn into oral cancer.
One American dies of oral cancer approximately every hour of every day. Tobacco and alcohol use are primary lifestyle risk factors, but 1 in 4 oral cancer victims doesn’t use tobacco or alcohol, or have any other lifestyle risk factors. Please come in for your screening. It only takes 5 minutes and it could potentially save your life!
Fluoride Treatments
As plaque develops, it wears away tooth enamel in a process called demineralization. Fluoride is a natural mineral that works to promote the remineralization of enamel, meaning it makes the outside of teeth stronger and more resistant to decay. When tooth decay is in its early stages, fluoride can sometimes help reverse it. Children can benefit a great deal from fluoride exposure, especially soon after their permanent teeth come in, but adults should make sure their teeth come in contact with it, too. The easiest way is to use fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash. If needed, we also provide in-office fluoride treatments for kids and adults!
Dental Sealants
Good dental hygiene habits are crucial for preventing cavities, but toothbrushes don’t always reach down into teeth’s deepest grooves. Dental sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to fill in hard-to-clean crevices where pesky food particles can get caught and cause decay. Sealant application is fast and easy. This small dental investment can yield years of protection for your child’s (or your) teeth, making it well worth it.
Custom Sportsguards & Nightguards
There’s more than one reason to wear a mouthguard. Whether you need a custom mouthguard to protect yours or your little leaguer’s teeth during sports, or whether you’re clenching or grinding and your teeth need protection while you sleep, we’ve got you covered. For athletes, we provide the AgilityGuard which can not only protect your smile during physical activity, but also improves core stability, strength, balance, and energy output! At Dental Solutions of Columbus, we create custom-fitted mouthguards to safeguard your smile in a variety of situations.
Tooth-Colored Fillings
We want your great smile to be what people notice, not your dental fillings. Our practice utilizes composite resin materials to make a tooth-colored dental filling. After we skillfully place the resin on your tooth, we cure it with a special light and shape and polish the surface. The end result is a practically undetectable restoration that feels and looks just like a natural tooth.
CEREC® Crowns & Bridges
Dental crowns are sometimes called caps. They completely cover existing teeth to restore them to their best size and shape after large fillings, breaks, or weakening forces such as clenching and grinding. In all these cases, crowns serve to strengthen teeth and also provide protection. Crowns are used to restore single teeth, to attach bridges, to cover dental implants, and even as a preventive measure when a tooth is in imminent danger of cracking.
A fixed dental bridge is permanently secured in place to bridge gaps left by one or more missing teeth. The teeth on either side of the bridge serve as anchor teeth. The crowns on the anchor teeth attach to the false tooth or teeth of the bridge. Bridges can be supported by natural teeth with crowns or by implant-supported crowns.
Traditional crowns take up to 2 weeks to create and place. However, we utilize CEREC® technology to design, fabricate, and place crowns in a single dental visit! CEREC dental crowns have the strength, durability, and beauty that you deserve for your smile.
Root Canal Therapy
Inside each tooth, there is soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels running from the root to the crown. A deep cavity, crack, or other injury to a tooth can damage the nerve, allowing bacteria to enter and kill the living tissue. The resulting infection, if left untreated, can cause pain, swelling and abscesses, tooth loss, and eventually damage to the bone surrounding the lost tooth. Through root canal therapy, we carefully remove the damaged tissue and gently clean the root canal. We then seal it off and place a crown to prevent other bacteria from entering and strengthen the tooth.
