Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a sweet-smelling, colorless blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas. It creates feelings of calm and well-being when inhaled. Some people describe a sense of giddy relaxation, which is why it is often called “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is administered through a flexible mask that sits comfortably on the nose. Breathing pure oxygen for several minutes after treatment reverses the effects of nitrous oxide.
This safe and easy sedation method makes it so many patients can feel at ease during treatment, particularly children and adolescents who experience dental anxiety or have trouble sitting still for extended periods of time. Nitrous oxide has also been found to be very helpful in making dental visits easier for patients with mental or physical impairments.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is a prescribed pill that sends patients into a deeper state of relaxation compared to nitrous oxide. Patients will feel extremely calm and relaxed, but will remain conscious and able to communicate with our team. The conscious sedation medications we use have high safety ratings on the therapeutic index. Most patients experience minimal to no lingering effects from oral conscious sedation, but it is common to feel a little wobbly while the medication wears off. For your safety, we require patients to have a friend or family member drive them home.
IV Sedation
When needed, we also provide intravenous (IV) anesthesia in our dental office and oral surgery center in Columbus, Indiana. Intravenous anesthetic medicines are administered directly into a vein where they’re quickly absorbed into the blood and rapidly take effect, making the patient fall asleep. IV sedation is most commonly used for patients undergoing more complex procedures such as dental implant placement or tooth extractions. During IV anesthesia, supplemental oxygen is delivered and vital signs are monitored. Your safety and health are of utmost importance to us while you’re in our care!
