Kids are constantly developing and reaching new milestones. It’s a fun journey watching them grow! When it comes to their smiles, there are many milestones they hit and it’s important to know what to look out for to ensure your child’s smile is developing properly. Here are the dental milestones for your child that we recommend looking out for and tracking!
Teething
The first milestone your little one will hit is teething. Teething occurs when kids start to get their first baby teeth in. Teething typically begins around 3 months old. Once your little one starts getting their baby teeth in, you can start experimenting with solid foods.
Getting a Full Set of Baby Teeth
Around the ages of two to three, your little one should have a full set of baby teeth. If you notice that your child has alignment or bite issues with their baby teeth, it’s important to discuss your concerns with your child’s dentist. If left untreated or monitored, issues with baby teeth can cause adult teeth to come in wrong down the road.
Losing Baby Teeth
Around age six, your child’s baby teeth will start coming out. Over the next two to three years, their adult (permanent) teeth will grow back in place of the baby teeth. Your child may experience pain or discomfort as their adult teeth erupt. Try using over-the-counter pain medication for discomfort and give them soft foods if they are in pain.
Getting Wisdom Teeth
The last set of teeth to come in are the wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the back set of molars on the top and bottom arch of teeth. While wisdom teeth don’t erupt when your child is little, it’s important that they know their wisdom teeth can erupt between the ages of 18 and 24. More often than not, wisdom teeth can wreak havoc on the surrounding teeth and need to be removed when they erupt.
