As your baby begins to teeth, you’ll likely start thinking about future dental appointments and milestones. In this post we’ll look at some dental milestones your child should be reaching as he or she matures.
1. Baby Teeth Erupting (Teething)
Baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, form beneath the gum line before they erupt. Baby teeth start to come to the surface between 6 to 12 months. The front top and bottom teeth are typically the first to erupt. Most children get all of their baby teeth in by the age of three. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children should start visiting the dentist after their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday.
2. Losing Baby Teeth
On average, children start losing their primary teeth around the age of six. Most baby teeth fall out naturally between a two to three-year time period. Baby teeth pave the way for adult teeth to grow in properly. However, it’s not uncommon to have some adult teeth that don’t come in properly.
3. Mixed Dentition
There will be a time, while your child’s permanent teeth are growing in, that your child will have a mixture of primary and permanent teeth. It’s important to safeguard their teeth and gums while the permanent teeth come in and replace the baby teeth. Having a set plan with your child’s dentist can ensure that your child’s teeth don’t get damaged or overcrowded during this milestone.
4. Orthodontic Treatment
Once your child’s permanent teeth have erupted, they may be in need of orthodontic treatment. Not only does orthodontic treatment improve the look of your child’s smile, but it can also ensure that their bite and teeth alignment aren’t hindering their dental health. If they are suffering from an over/underbite or they have crowded teeth, they may experience tooth or gum damage that can lead to a variety of additional health problems.
