Once his or her permanent teeth are all about grown in, you and your child are probably both thinking the same thing–braces. In this blog post, we’ll explore the question of when kids need braces so that you will know what to do when it comes time for your child to see an orthodontist.
No Normal
When it comes to almost everything with dental care and development, but especially with something as personal, and as pricey, as orthodontic work, there really is no normal. It’s recommended that a child see an orthodontist to get checked out once the permanent teeth begin to come in, usually around the age of seven. The visit doesn’t signify a need for braces, but it allows the orthodontist to have a look and address any problems early, if they exist. A lot of kids do get braces in middle school or early high school, but adults get braces too. There is no perfect age, it’s about what works best for your child and your family, and what the dentist and orthodontist recommend.
Why Braces?
At any age, braces can be used to address and correct a variety of issues, cosmetic and otherwise, including crooked teeth, crowding, overlapping teeth, or a misaligned bite. Braces can stay on for anything from 18 months to several years. While many people still opt for traditional, metal braces, clear aligners are increasingly popular, especially with older children and adults.
