How Does Periodontal Disease Develop?

Periodontal disease is usually preventable, and often reversible if caught early. So why do almost half of Americans over the age of 30 have some form of it? We think a lack of awareness is part of the problem — people just might not recognize the early warning signs of gum disease. To help protect your teeth, we’ve put together the following guide on the development and detection of periodontal disease.

What Causes Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, can have serious consequences. Not only is it the number one cause of tooth loss in adults but it can also increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. In the gingivitis stage of gum disease, plaque begins to build up along your gum line. This irritates your gums, which may become inflamed and/or start to recede. If left untreated, gingivitis will progress to periodontitis. This is associated with serious damage to your teeth and gums, pain, and infection.

What Are Some Early Warning Signs for Periodontal Disease?

Each time you visit Dr. Sitaram in our office, our team checks to make sure your gums are healthy. However, it is also important that you can recognize the early warning signs of gum disease at home. Common symptoms include swollen, red, or tender gums. Gums that bleed easily may also indicate gingivitis. You may also notice gum recession, losing teeth, toothaches, or even persistent bad breath.
