Best Way to Prevent Tooth Decay

Did you know that dental cavities are one of the most common dental problems that people get? Our Dental Solutions of Columbus team is excited to provide you with some key tips to help you avoid developing cavities and tooth decay!

Brush Twice a Day & Floss Every Day

While we’re sure that you’ve heard this a million times, it’s easy to forget or put off brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing. We understand that life can be busy and that brushing and flossing can feel like time-filled tasks. Trust us, it’s worth it! Regular brushing and flossing is a great line of defense against cavity development.

Limit High-Sugar Foods in Your Diet

Sugar eats away at enamel and can cause serious tooth decay. We advise limiting your sugar intake to prevent sugars from sitting on your teeth and wreaking havoc on your oral health. If you do eat something sugary, we recommend rinsing your mouth out with water afterward and then waiting at least 15 minutes before you brush your teeth. Sugar weakens teeth so it can be harmful to brush right after you eat sugar.

Visit the Dentist at Least Twice a Year

According to the American Dental Association, one of the best things you can do for your oral health is to visit the dentist twice a year for biannual cleanings and exams. Skilled dental hygienists can thoroughly clean your teeth and gums and target the hard-to-reach areas that are more susceptible to debris buildup. After your cleaning, your dentist can examine your smile and potentially catch any dental issues while they’re still small and easily treatable. At your biannual visits, dentists can also perform some preventive measures to stave off cavities, such as applying dental sealants over grooves in the teeth so bacteria can’t pool inside of them.
